Metroid: Samus Returns

Samus returns…unexpectedly!

Probably one of the biggest surprises during this year’s E3 event in Los Angeles was the announcement of a new 2D/3D Metroid game for the Nintendo 2DS and 3DS. Even greater than the announcement itself was that we do not need to wait for months on an end to enjoy the remake of Metroid II: Samus Return, but this game was already available on September 15th 2017.

X-Files

During the E3 gaming event it was only possible to play the first level of this remade Metroid game, and the people at the Nintendo booth were very strict about this. Gamers who wanted to play another level of the game needed to hand-over the Nintendo 2DS/3DS, and they lost their chance to see more of the game.

Adjusted gameplay

A couple of stills with 3D-depth introduce you to the story of Samus. Like said before, this game is a remake of the 1991 original which came out for the first and increasingly legendary Nintendo Gameboy. The story of the game has not been rewritten or upgraded, so the story is retro, but the graphics are new.

The controls went through a total revamp, because this time around Samus feels as a solid playable main character, which was not fully the case in the original game. In this modern edition of Metroid II you can focus Samus and aim more precise to get rid of your enemies. The new controls are interesting for experts of the game and newbies alike. There have also been some additions to the gameplay, e.g. Samus is now able to send a pulsating beam to uncover hidden places and items. Of course you can still turn into a robotic ball, and there is also the use of the Nintendo Amiibos although there is no indication yet of what these Amiibo will do for the way you play this remade Metroid game.

Metroid’s new features in a nutshell

  • The intense Metroid II: Samus Returns game is still a side-scrolling action platform game, but with optional 3D-graphics this time around. The game also has an updated colour palette.

  • This remake has lots of new content, e.g. melee attacks and 360 degree freedom to shoot and end your enemies.

  • There are many secrets to discover on the planet SR388, so gamers will have hours of gameplay to keep them busy for a good while.

  • Together with this new Metroid game Nintendo will release two new Amiibo figurines, one of Samus Aran and another of Metroid. There will be a connection between the Metroid remake and the new Amiibo, but what the connection is will be revealed later this year.
