On October 10th 2017 the long-awaited follow-up to the smash hit “Lord of the Rings: Shadow of Mordor” was released on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (probably also on Xbox Scorpio, but this is yet to be announced). This new game instalment is called “Middle-Earth: Shadow of War”. We pick up the story from where we left of in part 1 of this game franchise. This new instalment has the real Lord of the rings kind of feel which made chapter 1 of the story such a big hit. This new game reintroduces main characters Talion and the vengeful Celebrimbor, and next to this the Nemesis system is back.
The Nemesis is greater and bigger this time around, but kept its smart features from last game. Needless to say, that the Orcs are back, and they look as hideous and gruesome as the previous time the appeared in a video game. The Orcs are smart enough to mess up your plans, and next to this they hack ‘n slash their way through the game world. Each and every Orc has its own character with unique movements, fears and aggression. The thing that has changed is that in this new tale you can be the one who opens the battle. The Nemesis system is back, and cannot only be used by your enemies.

Conquering fortresses

In Shadow of War you can build an army of recruited Orcs which are going to fight for you and they will become a welcome addition to your mission. This game does not carry the name “Mordor”, because the areas you can discover are way bigger than only Sauron’s land.

In each region you are going to find yourself in you will find a fortress which you have to conquer, and by doing so you will progress in the game. In these fortresses you can find Orcs from all sorts of levels, but also deadly traps and dangers which can block your attack.

Nemesis II

The Nemesis system is partly responsible for which obstacles you are going to encounter; there will be Orcs who love to poison their enemies, and they will make sure they do so to defeat their enemy. You, as the perfect blend between a spirit and a warrior, can make sure that some of the recruited Orcs will climb the wall of the fortress, so they can distract the inhabitants, and you will be able to conquer the fortress. You can even appoint your own Orc as the new leader of the fortress.

Also, the Nemesis system is important in your own army ranks. Orcs can tell on you, they can bring death Orcs back to life, and they can even kill each other to rank higher in your army. In this game the Orcs are divided in tribes, with each its own specialties; there are tribes which are all about using technology, but there are others which like to practice ancient black magic. The tribes you recruit will affect the way you play Shadow of War.

Unexpected plot twists

This chapter in the Talion and Celebrimbor saga has more options than its predecessor and has more interesting plot twists and turns. The way Orcs will enter the battle arena and even their own personal names seem to be better integrated in the game. You can befriend an Orc, so that he can start supporting and rooting for you.

Shadow of War is everything that was done right in Shadow of Mordor…and more; the open-world is way bigger, the time you need to finish this game is longer, the gameplay is adapted and this game has more RPG-elements, Talion and Celebrimbor have more skills and there is a loot system.

Personalized game experience

The developer of Shadow of War has listened meticulously to the complaints there were about their previous instalment, and this resulted in a couple of great new features, e.g. gamers have the option to choose their own level of difficulty, but the level also automatically adjusts as gamers progress in the game. For the original story of Shadow of War the developers listened to Lord of the Rings experts and super-fans to create a very life-like world and a deep engaging story…
