Minecraft Legends: The Latest and Greatest Minecraft Spin-off

It’s been over a decade since Minecraft was released, and the sandbox block-building game is still remarkably popular. It’s difficult to find anybody who hasn’t tried, or at least heard of Minecraft at some point. Over the years since the game’s release, several spin-off games have come out, such as Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft: Story Mode. Minecraft Legends is the latest of these, an upcoming action-strategy game set to be released on all major platforms on April 18, 2023.

Much like Dungeons and Story Mode, Minecraft Legends takes place in the Minecraft universe but with an entirely new type of gameplay. In this case, for the first time Minecraft Legends brings the franchise in an all-new strategic direction. It’s Minecraft meets RTS games.

Save Minecraft From the Evil Piglins

Unlike Minecraft, which is known for its simplistic, sandbox charm, Minecraft Legends has a sort of story and greatly expands on the lore of the original game. According to what we know so far, in Legends the Minecraft universe has been invaded by evil Piglins from the Nether, and it’s up to you, the hero, to save the Overworld. The player will need to make alliances and develop their skills, leading exciting battles against the Piglins and stopping the corruption of the Nether before it’s too late.

It will be interesting to see how Minecraft Legends builds on the original game’s lore. Piglins were only added to Minecraft as recently as 2020, replacing zombie pigmen, although as with many things in Minecraft we know mysteriously little about them. They usually live in Bastions and contrast with the villagers of the Overworld, being far more hostile. However, in Minecraft it is possible to befriend Piglins by offering them gold items. Be that as it may, the truth of how the Piglins got to the Nether to begin with—and what their purpose is—remains ambiguous. Let’s hope Minecraft Legends finally explains it!

Discover Minecraft If It Were a Strategy Game

In Minecraft Legends, you’ll discover a new, procedurally generated interpretation of the Minecraft Overworld. It will feel like Minecraft, but slightly different as well. Unlike the original game, Minecraft Legends is played from a third-person perspective. It has a whole new gameplay style, and the focus on creativity seems to be shifted to strategy. The main gameplay loop has players traversing biomes on a mount while gathering materials, gaining allies, fighting Piglins and even crafting defensive bases. Don’t worry, you won’t be alone on your journey. Minecraft Legends lets you rally friendly mobs like badgers, llamas and many more to defend you.

What Will Minecraft Legends Multiplayer Be Like?

Minecraft Legends will also feature full co-op and competitive online multiplayer support. Co-op mode will simply feature the game's main campaign, while PvP will be a distinct mode, unconnected to the game's main story but just as fun. There are some similarities between the modes, such as the fact that combat areas will be procedurally generated and new each time, much like the original Minecraft.

In competitive PvP, up to eight players join a lobby, in which they'll split into two teams. Piglins will feature in PvP as well as the main campaign, adding a chaotic element to matches. Each team will then build a base and an army, before charging each other in battle. The goal is to destroy the base of the opposing team, while building your own structures to gain defensive advantages. It’s a bit like a Minecraft twist on League of Legends, while also featuring elements of Fortnite and other battle royale games. Having seen the gameplay in the trailers, we are looking forward to release day, that’s for sure!
