Apex Legends
EA has teamed up with Respawn Entertainment to come out with a legendary Battle Royale that now nearly matches Fortnite’s popularity: Apex Legends. It has been a few days since the release of this Battle Royale game, but already there are more than 25 million downloads. So why is this game so popular and is this a trend or a hype?
First of all, the game was developed by Respawn Entertainment. True, they are officially owned by EA and we all know that EA made some decisions in the past we were not happy with (Star Wars, for example). Respawn, however, has built a strong fanbase with their earlier Titanfall games. In addition, they did a good job looking at existing Battle Royale games (such as Fortnite) and making their own, tweaked version in a Titanfall setting. The game runs smoothly and the graphics are what some say more ‘mature’ than Fortnite’s.
Apex’s popularity sky-rockets even further
What has further caused this game to go from 0 to 25 million, is that there are also many streamers (sponsored or on its own initiative) who were excited to give this game a try. Well-known streamers such as Ninja, DrLupo and Myth were curious and have already spent the first necessary hours in the game. Many Fortnite pro players indicated that the game feels 'clean' and 'smooth'.
By the time Twitch was overrun with Apex Legends streams, EA’s stock market share went through the roof (+ 16% in just a few days!). The fact that the game is free to play and responds to the popular contemporary gaming aspects only made it sky-rocket even further. If there will be a development in competitive events (community-driven of course), it is possible that this hype will convert to a trend. But that moment is still far ahead and it is difficult to make a verdict so soon. For now we will just enjoy a new Battle Royale game with great graphics and smooth gameplay.
