The Umbrella Academy, written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, was first released in 2007. The comic series is about 6 siblings with superpowers who are reunited after the loss of their adoptive father. The eccentric billionaire adopted 7 children of which 6 turned out to have supernatural powers and trained them as a team of superheroes. In 2019, the comic was released as a new series on Netflix. The first season has 10 episodes and a second season has already been confirmed!

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before –Jenny Han

If you like school life, young adult and romance

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is a book from 2014 and part of a trilogy written by Jenny Han. It follows Korean-American teenager Lara Jean and love interest Peter Kavinsky. One day, Lara Jean finds out that her secret love letters which she writes to every crush but never sends have ended up in the hands of said boys. The movie adaption of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo was released in 2018 and was a whopping success. The second movie has been confirmed by Netflix and will most likely hit Netflix in 2020. The book and the movie are super cute and definitely worth the read/look if you like the Young Adult genre!

Brain on Fire is a true story told by Susannah Cahalan about her month long manic period when she was 24 years old. She was at the start of a new relationship and promising career at a large newspaper in New York when she suddenly started showing psychotic symptoms. In her autobiography Brain on Fire, she writes about her descent into madness and recovery from a rare autoimmune disease. A movie with the same name appeared on Netflix in 2018 with Chloë Grace Moretz playing Susannah.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas –John Boyne

If you like historical fiction, war stories and suspense

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a war novel written by John Boyne. When young German child Bruno moves to Poland with his family, he has to get used to everything. He befriends another boy on the other side of a fence near his house, not knowing he is a Jew held captive. The innocent and childish mindset of Bruno and his growing friendship with Shmuel during World War II is heart wrenching. The movie adaption on Netflix is even more powerful than the book and a tearjerker for sure.


ROOM -Emma Donoghue

If you like realistic fiction and suspense

ROOM is a novel written by Emma Donoghue and is told from the perspective of 5-year old Jack. He was born in ‘Room’ in captivity, even though he does not know this; the 4 by 4 meter room is his whole world. Together with his mother ‘Ma’, they live separated from society and are only visited by Old Nick, the man who kidnapped her 8 years ago. But then Ma comes up with a plan that might help her and Jack escape… The book is full of suspense and the movie is just as gripping. Brie Larson and child actor Jacob Tremblay put on a great performance. It is no surprise that both the book and movie are very successful in the literary and film world.
