In the first game your choices could heavily impact the ending, altering Max’s future and also the lives of all the town’s residents. Are Max and Chloe still together, or did she let her go? What happened to her friends and to Arcadia Bay? The different outcomes of the first game could be what gave rise to the dual realities in this game, with your “main reality” being created by your choice and the other being a big “what if” if you had made the opposite decision. What is certain is that several old characters will make at least a brief appearance, for the joy of all nostalgic fans. Whether they have some part to play in this story, that remains to be seen.
