Microsoft has pulled the plug on the Xbox Live Gold service, which provided online multiplayer and other benefits to subscribers. It has been replaced by the new Game Pass Core, which has similar functionality. From now on this page will not be updated anymore, you can find all the news about the monthly updates on our brand-new Game Pass page.
What happened to the Xbox Live Gold?
Xbox Live Gold (formerly simply Xbox Live) has been around since the early days of the first Xbox console. It provided online functionality to multiplayer games, plus several perks and discounts. In July 2013 the Games with Gold program was created, offering subscribers free digital downloads of select monthly games for the Xbox 360 (later also Xbox One and Series X|S). On September 14, 2023, Xbox Live Gold was discontinued and replaced by the newest service named Game Pass Core. All Xbox One/X|S games redeemed in the past will stay in the gamers’ libraries as long as they have an active Game Pass Core subscription. Redeemed Xbox 360 games, instead, will be free to keep even with no subscription.
Game Pass Core takes over Xbox Live Gold
Starting September 14, 2023, the Game Pass Core took its first steps in the Xbox World. It allows players to play multiplayer games online (note that, as with Live Gold, free-to-play games like Fortnite do not require Game Pass) and gives access to a range of perks and discounts on games and items. The biggest difference between the new service and the old one is in the games offered for free. While Games with Gold gave players a couple of games each month, Game Pass Core has its own library of 25+ select games instantly accessible by subscribers.
