For those unfamiliar with FF7: the story is about Cloud Strife, a mercenary who joins the terrorist group that calls itself the Avalanche. They are charged with the difficult task of stopping an evil corporation that tries to deprive the planet of its life force to fuel its power over society even more. Long story short.
More than 23 years ago, the original Final Fantasy 7 was first released for the PlayStation. Square Enix is known for its graphical wow factor so in the remake, the bar is set high for viewers who have seen the opening cinematic.
Nowadays, it's common for publishers to release a game and then throw in some DLCs. That will also happen for Final Fantasy 7, but there should be a solid reason for that. The first chapter will be more expansive, more in-depth and the story of Cloud with his team travelling in and around Midgar will be more intense.
Within seconds after you're in the game, you're thrown directly into the action. You have but a few moments to absorb everything before the soldiers come running at you. For a moment, the combat system even feels like Kingdom Hearts 3, but quickly gains in-depth.
In the original, we're used to a turn-based system. They haven't completely dropped this system, so no worries there. It is possible to slow down time at any time by pressing a button, whereafter a menu will appear to select spells, skills, items and other commands. It's a miraculous combination between turn-based mechanics, which is basically outdated, and the new high-speed combat systems. The only drawback is that the camera shows little perspective. It would have been better if you could zoom out a bit further so that you have a better view of your enemies when you open up the ability and spell menu.
Now that the remake has been rebuilt step by step, it feels like a completely new game, and yet it does not. The original 'body' of Final Fantasy 7 is gone, but the spirit of the game has been preserved and completely refreshed.
After the demo it is clear to us: FF7 is everything it should be and more. We started sceptically but soon fell in love with the new rendering, combat systems, and of course the feels of nostalgia. Square Enix can be proud of this beautiful achievement!
