What is Silent Hill f?
Silent Hill f (with a lowercase f) is the 8th mainline entry in the Silent Hill franchise, a staple of horror gaming with an emphasis on psychological unease. While previous entries were set in the fictional American town of Silent Hill, this game setting changes completely and the story now takes place in a remote village in Japan, in 1960. The main character, Hinako, is a regular teenage student who suddenly finds herself lost with her friends in the maze-like village of Ebisugaoka, its streets and alleys enveloped in thick fog. In line with the franchise, during the game Hinako will have to face both monsters and her own trauma and inner demons.
How does this game stand out from the previous ones?
The first main difference is the setting, for the first time a Silent Hill game is set in Japan instead of the titular Silent Hill town. This makes a world of difference for the mood and atmosphere. Another big change is that there are no guns or any kind of firearm in this game. All combat is strictly hand-to-hand, which makes things more personal and scary. Hinako can arm herself with iron pipes, sticks and other common objects, but they all get damaged and break after some time, so players have to constantly find new weapons and carefully consider if a fight is worth it. Sometimes it’s better to just run.
What does the f in the title stand for?
There is no official explanation for that. Many theories have surfaced, the most popular being it means “forte” (loud, strong), as in musical notation, opposed to the “Silent” part of the title. Others believe it stands for “five”, since earlier games stopped numbering at 4. Or it could be “flower”, a reference to the aesthetic of the game. Whatever it is, what’s certain is that Silent Hill f is a “F”abulous game.
