What is Mario Tennis Fever for Switch 2?

In between saving his ever-kidnapped princess and jumping into pipes, Mario likes to practice several sports. This time he hits the tennis court, together with most characters from his other games. Players can engage in 1 VS 1 or 2 VS 2 matches, choose realistic tennis action (more or less) or include over-the-top special shots, and face several unorthodox single-player activities. One thing’s for sure, you are not going to get easily bored with Mario Tennis Fever!

The game is released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2, and it shows in the crisp graphics and a ton of details on screen, beginning with the crowds actively watching the match and supporting the players. With 38 characters to choose from, each with their own unique combination of strengths and weaknesses, every player can find a favourite that suits their playstyle. Fever Rackets, what are they?

Fever Rackets are the new game mechanic unique to Mario Tennis Fever. Each of the over 30 Rackets possesses a special power that players can activate when the Fever gauge is full. Some have area effects that will slow down or damage the opponent, others change the ball’s speed and behaviour. But the trick is that most effects only become active once the ball hits the ground, so you have the chance -if fast and skilled enough- to hit the ball back to your opponent, sending their own negative effect back at them!

Just imagine the chaos when you are playing 2 VS 2, each player with a different Fever effect activating at a different time! It can feel more like the frantic action of a Mario Party or Super Smash Bros game than a normal tennis match. Of course it’s always possible to play with normal rackets, ditching the special effects in favour of classic tennis action. All the regular moves like serve, lob, spin and such are well implemented and easy to perform, so with a little practice anyone can become a star player.

Which game modes are available?

Mario Tennis Fever wouldn’t be a Nintendo game if it didn’t offer a number of different game modes for both single and multiplayer. Some of these include:

• Adventure Mode - Story-driven campaign where Mario and friends are turned into babies and must re-learn tennis while facing bosses and challenges.
• Tournament - Traditional tennis competition (single-player) with commentary (by Talking Flower) and progression through multiple matches.
• Trial Towers - Climb a tower by completing a set of increasingly difficult matches or skill trials.
• Mix It Up - Special themed match variations with unique rules and gimmicks (e.g., Ring Shot, Forest Court Match, Pinball Match, Wonder Court Match).
