What is Pokémon?
Pokémon is one of the biggest videogame franchises from Nintendo, counting over 120 titles including all kinds of spinoffs. What is Pokémon FireRed Version?
Pokémon FireRed Version for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 is a modern remaster for current consoles of the 2004 Game Boy Advance game, which in turn was a remake of the original Pokémon Red, the very first Pokémon game from 1996. The plot of this classic Pokémon adventure is as simple as can be: the player receives a starter Pokémon from Professor Oak, and journeys across the Kanto region. The goal is to collect eight Gym badges, defeat the villainous Team Rocket, overcome the Elite Four, and become the Champion, all while completing the Pokédex.
Did you know? The original game release in Japan pre-dates the contraction of the title into Pokémon, and was sold as Pocket Monsters.
What is new in FireRed?
This Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 digital remaster was released on 27 February 2026 to celebrate Pokémon Day and the franchise’s 30th anniversary. The game includes all content from the 2004 Game Boy Advance remake:
- Improved graphics and audio
- The Sevii Island region
- Additionally, this Switch version is a digital-only release, no physical copies were made
What is the difference between Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen?
Like all mainline Pokémon games, FireRed has a “twin” version called LeafGreen. The only difference between the two versions consists in the Pokémon you can capture. There are about 20 Pokémon that are exclusive to FireRed, while LeafGreen has about 20 different Pokémon exclusive to it. The only way to collect them all is to trade with a player who has the opposite version.
