What is Pokémon Legends Z-A?

Pokémon Legends Z-A is the latest Pokémon game for Switch. The “Legends” in the title indicates that this game is a spinoff, a deviation from the mainline games of the franchise. That is exactly what allows Z-A to make some changes and innovate the classic formula. This game is entirely set in Lumiose City, the capital of the Kalos region, modeled after Paris. What makes Z-A unique among Pokémon games?

Pokémon Legends Z-A introduces a few innovations that make it stand out from other Pokémon games:

• Set entirely within Lumiose City - Having the entire game set within a single city where humans and Pokémon coexist emphasizes the local mood and culture. The city itself, with its central Prism Tower, becomes a presence as important as any character.
• Real-time battles - For the first time in the long history of the Pokémon franchise, battles are not turn-based. The player character can move freely around the battlefield, with his chosen Pokémon following close behind, and can order attacks at will. This adds a whole new layer of strategy and excitement to every battle.
• Mega Evolutions - Pokémon can now undergo Mega Evolution and become larger and more powerful for a time. This feature was already present in a few games, but in Z-A it goes a step further and can be used at will by every Pokémon, provided that the Mega Gauge is full.

Climbing the ranks from Z to A

The landscape of Lumiose City changes at night. Battle Zones appear, and trainers can engage in the Z-A Royale, an event where they can climb from Rank Z all the way up to Rank A (hence the game title) by winning promotion battles. It’s a refreshing change from the usual gyms, as seen in most previous games.

Who are the starting Pokémon in Z-A?

At the beginning of the game, players can choose their favourite companion Pokémon from these options:

• Chikorita - Grass type
• Tepig - Fire type
• Totodile - Water type

Does Pokémon Z-A work on Switch 2?
