What is the Pokémon franchise?
Pokémon is one of the most recognizable and prolonged-running video game series in history, and it is helped by its even more successful animated series. Characters such as Pikachu have achieved worldwide household name status. The focus of the game is capturing and evolving Pokémon (short for Pocket Monsters) to do battle with other Pokémon and elite trainers. Players can also battle and trade with other players to collect all the Pokémon. The Pokémon franchise is massive in every sense: across nine generations of games, there are more than 1,000 Pokémon species introduced.
What is Pokémon Shining Pearl?
Shining Pearl, released in 2021, is a remake of the classic Pokémon Pearl from 2007, originally available for the Nintendo DS. Alongside its counterpart Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, it is considered one of the best entries in the series. This remake faithfully recreates the original game while updating the graphics and mechanics to fit modern standards. However, it maintains a level of simplicity that many fans of earlier generations find appealing. Shining Pearl offers a nostalgic experience while allowing new players to discover a gem from Pokémon's history.
At the start of the game, players can choose one of three starter Pokémon:
- Turtwig (Grass type)
- Chimchar (Fire type)
- Piplup (Water type)
Which exclusive Pokémon are available in Shining Pearl?
Shining Pearl features some exclusive Pokémon, such as Shieldon and Glameow, which are not found in Brilliant Diamond. To obtain all Pokémon, players must trade with others or own both versions of the game. Shining Pearl’s Legendary Pokémon is Palkia, a Steel/Dragon-type creature that controls space and dimensions.
Does Pokémon Shining Pearl have online features?
The game itself is mostly single player, but the online aspect is present. Trainers worldwide can take on and trade Pokémon with one another, or explore the Grand Underground together, a cooperative portion of the game that incorporates fossil-digging and other adventures. A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is needed to access these online features.
