Information
What is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?
Tears of the Kingdom is the latest entry in the almost 40-year old Legend of Zelda game series, and a direct sequel to the 2017 masterpiece Breath of the Wild. Like its predecessor, it is an open-world game where players can go wherever they wish, and can spend more time doing sidequest and exploring every nook and cranny than following the main storyline. The variety of things to do and secrets to discover, coupled with wonderful gameplay, make it easy to sink many dozens of hours, even hundreds, into Tears of the Kingdom.
While the open world structure allows players to roam freely, to the point that they can even go straight to the game ending, such a route is not really advisable. Much of the fun in this game consists of exploring the fabulous world of Hyrule and discovering many of its secrets. Unlike other games, in Tears of the Kingdom the game only provides the most basic navigation guidance, leaving the player free to explore without crowding the map with endless objectives. This approach avoids laying the burden of infinite tasks on the player and lets them enjoy the game their own way, contributing to the fun.
An adventure in 3 dimensions
Tears of the Kingdom is truly three-dimensional. Not only because the graphics are 3D (gone are the days of 2D sprites on static backgrounds), but the world itself can be explored wide and large, up and down. Link, the main character, is not limited to wandering the land of the kingdom, but can travel to the many sky islands that float above the clouds, or can move below the surface and explore the Depths, a dark underground area that spans as large as the surface of Hyrule itself! One thing is certain: players could be running around in some makeshift vehicle, diving from a sky island, or cautiously exploring the underground caves, whatever they do they will find interesting mechanics at work and will have a lot of fun!
Will I need to build things to progress?
Arguably the most prominent new mechanic in Tears of the Kingdom is Link’s new ability to create gear and constructs by attaching together practically any object he can find. Need a new sword? Grab a beast’s horn and attach it to a handle. Want to move faster? 4 wheels, a platform and an energizer core, you got a car. Or a boat. A plane. A giant robot. A laser-shooting satellite. Really, if you can think of it, most probably you can build it and have it work. Some players will spend months building all kinds of outlandish contraptions, and that’s perfectly fine. Players who don’t enjoy the building process have no need to engage in it beyond a minimal extent, just for story progression, with materials conveniently placed near the place they’re intended to be used.
