World of Warcraft is one of the most influential online games ever created and remains the most recognisable MMORPG in gaming history. Released by Blizzard Entertainment in 2004, the game takes players to Azeroth, a massive fantasy world filled with magic, war, ancient kingdoms, dragons, and legendary heroes.
Unlike traditional multiplayer games focused on short matches, World of Warcraft is built around long-term progression, exploration, and social interaction. Players create their own character, choose between the Alliance or the Horde, and explore enormous regions filled with quests, dungeons, raids, and player-versus-player battles.
Part of what made World of Warcraft so important was its accessibility. Earlier MMORPGs were often difficult to approach, but WoW simplified many systems while still offering enormous depth. This helped the game reach millions of players worldwide and turned it into a cultural phenomenon that shaped the MMO genre for decades.
Over the years, Azeroth expanded through multiple expansions, each adding new continents, races, classes, and gameplay systems. Even after more than twenty years, World of Warcraft continues to evolve with new stories, seasonal content, and modernised gameplay systems.
World of Warcraft combines exploration, combat, progression, and social gameplay into one large online experience. Players can choose from multiple fantasy races and classes, each offering unique abilities and combat styles. The game features a long-running fantasy storyline centred around the world of Azeroth, where the Alliance and Horde fight alongside (and against) each other while facing threats such as demons, undead armies, dragons, and ancient cosmic forces.
Much of the game revolves around completing quests, exploring new zones, improving equipment, and taking part in group activities such as dungeons and raids. Cooperative gameplay plays a major role, especially during large raid encounters that require coordination between dozens of players. The game also includes competitive PvP modes, professions for crafting and gathering, collectible mounts and pets, and a large in-game economy centred around gold and the Auction House. Thanks to its variety of activities, players can focus on combat, exploration, roleplaying, collecting, or social interaction depending on their preferred playstyle.
Another important aspect of World of Warcraft is its subscription model. Many long-time players still use WoW time cards to extend their game time, especially those who prefer not to use recurring subscriptions.
World of Warcraft Classic
The original version of World of Warcraft introduced players to Azeroth and laid the foundation for modern MMORPGs. Classic WoW focused heavily on exploration, slower progression, and community interaction, creating a more social and challenging experience compared to modern versions of the game, Years later, Blizzard re-released WoW Classic to allow players to revisit the original experience with updated server technology while preserving the gameplay and mechanics from the early days of WoW.
The Burning Crusade
Released in 2007, The Burning Crusade was WoW’s first expansion and introduced the shattered world of Outland. The expansion added flying mounts, heroic dungeons, and two new playable races: the Blood Elves and the Draenei. The expansion greatly expanded endgame content and established the expansion structure Blizzard would continue using for years.
Wrath of the Lich King
Often considered one of the greatest WoW expansions ever made, Wrath of the Lich King brought players to Northrend to face Arthas Menethil, the Lich King. The expansion introduced the Death Knight hero class and featured some of the most iconic raids and storylines in MMORPG history. For many players, this era represented the peak popularity of World of Warcraft.
Cataclysm
Cataclysm dramatically reshaped Azeroth by redesigning much of the original game world. The return of the dragon Deathwing caused massive destruction across familiar zones, permanently changing the landscape of the game. The expansion also modernised many gameplay systems and improved quest design for newer players.
Mists of Pandaria
Mists of Pandaria introduced the continent of Pandaria and the Pandaren race. While its lighter visual style initially surprised players, the expansion became highly praised for its class design, raids, music, and storytelling. The Monk class also debuted during this expansion.
Warlords of Draenor
This expansion explored an alternate-timeline version of Draenor, the homeland of the Orcs. Warlords of Draenor introduced Garrisons, which allowed players to manage their own military base and followers. Although opinions on the expansion were mixed, its levelling experience and visual design were widely appreciated.
Legion
Legion became one of the franchise’s most celebrated expansions thanks to its strong storytelling and gameplay systems. Players fought against the Burning Legion alongside iconic Warcraft characters while wielding powerful Artifact Weapons unique to each class. The expansion also introduced the Demon Hunter class and featured one of WoW’s strongest endgame systems.
Battle for Azeroth
Battle for Azeroth renewed the conflict between the Alliance and the Horde while introducing the regions of Kul Tiras and Zandalar. The expansion focused heavily on faction warfare, naval themes, and large-scale battles. It also expanded customisation options with Allied Races.
Shadowlands
Shadowlands took players beyond the world of Azeroth into the realm of the afterlife. The expansion introduced Covenants, new progression systems, and several unique fantasy zones representing different aspects of death within Warcraft lore. While ambitious, some of its gameplay systems divided the community.
Dragonflight
Dragonflight shifted the focus back toward exploration and adventure. Players travelled to the Dragon Isles and learned dragonriding, one of the most praised movement systems ever added to WoW. The expansion also modernised talent trees and streamlined several gameplay systems.
The War Within
Released in 2024, The War Within marks the beginning of the Worldsoul Saga, a multi-expansion storyline focused on the mysterious forces hidden deep beneath Azeroth. The expansion introduces underground regions, new progression systems, and a darker narrative direction while continuing Blizzard’s efforts to modernise World of Warcraft for current players. It’s the first part of the “Worldsoul Saga”, an ambitious overarching story planned to span over three expansions.
Midnight
Released on 2 March 2026, Midnight is the second chapter of the Worldsoul Saga. The expansion brings players back to Quel’Thalas, where Azeroth faces a growing threat from Xal’atath and the Void. It also introduces one of the most requested WoW features ever: player housing.
One of the unique aspects of World of Warcraft is that players can experience both the original version of the game and the modern retail version. WoW Classic focuses more on slower progression, social interaction, and traditional MMORPG design. Modern WoW, often called Retail WoW, offers faster gameplay, more streamlined systems, and constant seasonal updates. Blizzard also expanded Classic with special modes such as Hardcore servers and Season of Discovery, giving veteran players new ways to revisit older content.
World of Warcraft expansions timeline
Even after more than two decades, World of Warcraft continues to evolve. Blizzard already confirmed that the Worldsoul Saga will continue with the future expansion The Last Titan, which aims to expand the story of Azeroth even further. At the same time, WoW continues adapting to modern expectations through updated graphics, improved accessibility, cross-faction systems, and regular content updates. Despite increasing competition within the MMO genre, World of Warcraft remains one of the most active and influential online games in the world.
