What is an Upgrade Pack for Nintendo Switch 2?

A Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Pack is a digital upgrade that lets you turn a compatible Nintendo Switch game into its enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Instead of buying the full game again, you simply purchase the Upgrade Pack and continue playing your existing copy with all the improvements available on Nintendo Switch 2.
Please note that the Upgrade Pack does not include the base game. You must already own the original Nintendo Switch version, either as a physical game card or a digital download from Nintendo eShop. Once you've redeemed the upgrade code, you'll be able to enjoy the enhanced version on your Nintendo Switch 2 console.

What features can I expect if I upgrade my game?

Each Nintendo Switch 2 Edition includes different enhancements, so the features included with an Upgrade Pack vary from game to game. In many cases, you can expect improved graphics, smoother frame rates, faster loading times and better overall performance, making your favourite games look and play better than ever.
Some Switch 2 upgrades also introduce brand-new features that weren't possible on the original Nintendo Switch. Depending on the title, these may include new gameplay modes, CameraPlay support, enhanced controls or other exclusive content. Are Upgrade Packs available for all Switch games?

No. Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Packs are only available for selected Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo and other publishers decide individually which titles receive a Switch 2 Edition, so not every game can be upgraded.
If a game supports an Upgrade Pack, you'll usually have the choice between purchasing the digital upgrade on its own or buying the complete Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Can I keep playing the game on Switch after the upgrade?

Yes. Buying a Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Pack doesn't replace your original game or prevent you from playing it on Nintendo Switch. Your existing copy remains exactly as it was, so you can continue enjoying the original version whenever you like. Depending on the game, save data may not be fully compatible between the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions, so switching back and forth between the two consoles may not always be possible.
The Switch 2 enhancements become available when you play the game on a Nintendo Switch 2 console. If you own the physical edition, simply insert the game card as usual. If you own a digital version, the upgraded game will be linked to your Nintendo Account after redeeming the Upgrade Pack.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online?

No. A Nintendo Online membership is not required to buy, redeem or use a Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Pack. Once you've purchased your digital upgrade and downloaded it, you can enjoy the enhanced version without an active subscription.
The only exception is if the game itself includes online multiplayer or other online features, as these will still require Nintendo Switch Online on Switch 2 if they did on Switch. It's also worth noting that some Nintendo-published Switch 2 upgrades are available at no additional cost for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.

Can I buy the complete Nintendo Switch 2 Edition instead?

Absolutely. Many supported games are also sold as a complete Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which includes both the original Nintendo Switch game and all the enhancements designed for Nintendo Switch 2 in a single package.
If you don't already own the game, this is usually the easiest option. On the other hand, if you already have the original version in your collection, purchasing the Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Pack is by far the more cost-effective choice. Either way, you'll be able to experience the improved graphics, performance and exclusive features that make these enhanced editions the best way to play on Nintendo Switch 2.
