Banishers, a tale of supernatural love

Banishers Header
Banishers - Ghosts of New Eden is the latest action-adventure game developed by Dontnod Entertainment, the company famous for its Life is Strange series. Judging by the previews, it seems this will be one of the most interesting games of the upcoming season, so let’s see what it’s all about.

New Eden is not really an Eden

The place is New Eden, North America. The year is 1695. Life is as ordinary as always: people live peacefully (more or less), die, and come back as ghosts… wait, ghosts? That seems definitely out of the ordinary, but apparently is the norm for the game’s world. That’s why fighters called Banishers exist in the first place. Their job is to confront the spirits, find out their motives, and eventually decide whether to ascend them to the next plane of existence or banish them to the void and an eternity of torment. Which will be the best option? The choice is the player’s alone, but it’s not as easy as it seems.

A love that transcends life and death

Players take the roles of Red and Antea, two Banishers who share a deep romantic relationship. Unfortunately, skilled as she is, Antea is one day killed during an attack and left wandering the mortal plane as a ghost, unable to shed her regret and sorrow. Now she is bound to her lover, and together they roam the land in search of a way to make Antea come back to life, or Ascend for good. “Life to the living, Death to the dead” is the Banisher’s motto, but what will Red do when the dead is his partner and lover? Can he simply let her go, or will he go against every rule and belief to get her back?

Red

Banishers is mostly based on choice. And a lot of fighting.

The gameplay of Banishers - Ghosts of New Eden reminds us a lot of the recent God of War games, but it also has a lot in common with Life is Strange. So, what do we get when we mix such different genres? Life is War? Kratos is Strange? While both of these are technically true, to some extent, Banishers manages to strike a good balance between the two. The combat is dynamic and satisfying, constantly alternating between Red’s physical attacks and Antea’s spirit abilities. Still, what really defines this game is the lore. Players will find a lot of information about the places, characters and events they encounter, and will need to make good use of all such info to make the Big Decision that usually awaits them at the end of each mission. Will they choose to be merciful, granting peace to a tortured soul, or will they condemn whoever they are dealing with, progressing Antea’s return to life?
