What is Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection?
Monster Hunter Stories is a spinoff series of RPG games set in the world of Monster Hunter. This latest game, Twisted Reflection, focuses on protecting the environment and saving local monster species from extinction. The two countries of Azuria and Vermeil are on a path to destruction when an egg from the supposedly extinct species Rathalos is discovered. But, instead of a single creature, twins hatched from the egg, each bearing the dreaded Skyscale marking from the disastrous civil war 200 years prior. Amidst the looming war and many monster species dangerously close to extinction, the Protagonist and their loyal Rathalos must ride in the skies and battle monsters to give the world a chance for hope.
What kind of game is this?
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection gameplay is a mix of turn-based RPG and monster collecting. You roam the game world fighting wild monsters with some companions and your own Monsties (tamed monsters). The battles are turn-based, using a rock-scissors-paper logic, and you can link attacks in powerful combos. Both your characters and your Monsties gain experience from battles, collecting resources and other actions, gradually getting stronger and unlocking new skills. You can also find Monster eggs and hatch them, adding more Monsties to your stable, with a chance to obtain a rare dual-element monster.
How is Monster Hunter Stories 3 unique?
This new episode of Monster Hunter Stories introduces a new roster of characters and a new setting, centuries into the future compared to previous games. The overall tone is darker and more dramatic, and the narrative focuses more on the riders than on world events. It’s a self-contained story, players don’t need to have played the previous Stories games. Unlike previous entries, this time the game seems to be single-player only, there is no mention of multiplayer options, at least at launch.
