GTA VI - Will It Be Worth the Wait?

It is incredible to think that GTA V was released a decade ago. Launched in 2013, the groundbreaking action-adventure game shattered industry records and remains a favourite among streamers with its popular online mode, GTA Online. The game's enduring popularity has led to huge anticipation for its sequel. While fans have eagerly awaited a follow-up for years, Rockstar Games is renowned for taking its time and its meticulous attention to detail. This dedication ensures that GTA VI will undoubtedly meet, if not exceed, the extremely high standards set by its predecessors.

The first trailer

In the first days of December, 2023, Rockstar Games released the first official trailer for GTA 6. It only lasts 90 seconds, but what is shown is enough to get the hype well over 9000! The game seems to be set in a modern-day Vice City, in the state of Leonida (the GTA versions of Miami and Florida, respectively). We are introduced to one of the main characters, a decisive and strong-willed inmate named Lucia, the first ever female protagonist of a GTA game. It’s later revealed that she has an unnamed accomplice/partner, we believe the story will have us play as both of them, switching viewpoints as needed. Therefore we can expect a Bonnie-and-Clyde kind of adventure, with a strong emphasis on the narrative. But GTA games are a lot more than just their plot, so we’re quickly introduced to a plethora of possible side activities. We can see club parties, street racing, and a lot of other things that the players may possibly engage in.

Vehicles, animals and people

A GTA game would not be a GTA game without a whole load of vehicles of all kinds to steal and drive! In the trailer we can see regular everyday cars, high-end cars, modded rides, trucks, boats, planes, helicopters, bikes, fanboats, and we would bet our last pot of Nutella that the game will feature a lot more than that! Being set in a fictional Florida it is no surprise that a lot of wildlife is included. In the trailer we can see a small dog, a flock of pink flamingos and a few alligators, chilling in places where they would have no right to be, but they don’t care and go in anyway. How cool would it be if the game allowed players to have pets, and we could walk around with our personal alligator?
Speaking of diversity, it can be noted that the human fauna has a lot of variety, too. We can see plenty of body sizes, shapes and colors, and some creative tattooing. It’s highly unlikely that players will be able to customize their characters (apart from clothes and accessories), but the game world seems diverse and inclusive, a good thing for everyone.

The importance of being social

Most moments in the trailer show some kind of social interaction, as is to be expected by a game set in our times. There are clips with comments and reactions, social posts, and in most scenes it’s possible to spot some character fiddling with their phones, either taking pictures or checking their socials. How this will tie in with the actual gameplay remains to be seen, but we are sure that the online world will play a major role in GTA 6’s world.

A Game World of Unparalleled Immensity

Rockstar Games has set the bar high when it comes to creating expansive, immersive game worlds. Their commitment to delivering vast, detailed environments is evident in titles like their most recent game, Red Dead Redemption 2, which features a map that dwarfs even the world of Bethesda's Skyrim. One of the predictable rumours about GTA VI is therefore that the game world will be immense. Given Rockstar's track record of consistently outdoing themselves, it is expected for them to deliver an absolutely gigantic world to explore.

Details are sparse, but there are also rumours that GTA VI will feature a dynamic evolving map that changes in response to the game's story and player choices. It has even been suggested that the gameplay might span multiple cities and possibly various time periods.

Random World Events

One of the most unexpected GTA 6 leaks was a list of the names of random in-game world events. Among the events leaked are scenarios like the "Bonnie & Clyde Mystery," seemingly another allusion to the criminal duo. Another notable event is the "Voice in a storm drain," which might be a nod to the iconic Pennywise character from Stephen King’s It. Events such as "Abandoned Hovercraft," "Drug Lab," and "Warehouse Sex Robots" hint at the various unpredictable scenarios players are going to encounter. The "Basketball Court" event suggests the return of playable basketball, while the "Satanist house" and "Scarface Crime Scene" indicate darker, more mysterious in-game events. Furthermore, the game seems like it will feature real-time events like "DUI Test," "Kidnapping Victim," and "Sniper Nest," adding new layers of realism. If these leaks hold true, players can expect their GTA VI experience to feel vastly more dynamic than in previous games.

Explorable Building Interiors

The GTA series is renowned for its vast, endlessly explorable open-world landscapes. However, a notable limitation in previous games has been the scarcity of enterable buildings. This limitation can be primarily attributed to two factors: the significant processing power required to render buildings that players will probably not enter, and the extensive development time involved in designing thousands of interiors. Regardless, the recent leak suggests that the game will feature a significantly higher number of accessible buildings than its predecessors. This is a notable development, considering that many buildings in previous GTA games were merely decorative and couldn't be entered by players at all. This could greatly enhance the game's exploration potential.

Since its debut in 1997, the Grand Theft Auto series has consistently been at the cutting edge of the video game industry. While GTA VI rumours will no doubt continue to abound for a while, one thing remains certain: Rockstar's dedication to crafting immersive, detailed, and groundbreaking experiences. Whether it's revisiting beloved game worlds, introducing dual protagonists, or weaving a myriad of dynamic world events, GTA VI promises to be a monumental chapter in the series. The bad news, though, is that the game will only be released in 2025, as shown right at the end of the trailer. As fans around the world hold their breath, the overarching sentiment is clear: if any game is worth the wait, it is going to be GTA VI!
