What is Tales of Berseria?
Tales of Berseria is a 2016 action RPG game in the long-running “Tales of” series. Originally released for PlayStation and PC, this Remastered version brings this beautiful game to Xbox Series X|S. Like all Tales games, it is a Japanese-style RPG with real-time combat and an emphasis on character relationships. The story sees Velvet, just a regular girl, become involved in a ritual that kills her brother and leaves her disfigured with a demonic arm. Velvet will journey to seek out the culprit, together with some friends she meets along the way. Since the combat is real-time, players can only control one character at a time, but they can set the AI behaviour of the other fighting characters to suit their wishes, and also switch to any character during combat. This keeps things active and interesting, a far cry from old-style turn-based battles.
The new features in the Remastered version
The Remastered version of Tales of Berseria has updated graphics, running up to 4K at a higher frame rate than the original version. But that's not all. The developer added several improvements to modernize the interface and gameplay, making boring tasks much more manageable. Some of the improvements include:
- Grade Shop available from the first playthrough
- Movement speed increased
- New map markers for easier navigation
- Unlimited fast-travel available almost from the start
- Autosaving
- Option to retry lost battles, instead of Game Over
- Option to disable enemy encounters (when you want to quickly run through previously visited, low-level areas)
And there’s more! They also included most of the items previously released as DLC, like costumes and consumables.

Tales of Berseria is a great game for all lovers or JRPGs, with an intriguing story, great characters and satisfying combat. The combat is actually the strong point of the game, and can actually be the main focus for some gamers less interested in other role-playing activities.
