Minecraft is a sandbox game, in other words a game where the player has a lot of freedom and can visit the game world at will, instead of having to follow predetermined paths and rules. In Minecraft players can mine resources (rocks, wood and such) and use them to build anything they can imagine. Some of the most impressive things made by players include giant statues, whole cities, and even a library holding real newspaper articles for the benefit of gamers living in countries that don’t enjoy free press! Since its beginning in 2011, Minecraft has grown a lot, becoming the best-selling game of all time with over 230 million copies sold. Lately more games have been added to the Minecraft universe, to offer players different experiences in the iconic blocky style Minecraft is famous for.
The Real-Time Strategy: Minecraft Legends
The latest addition to the expanding Minecraft universe is Minecraft Legends, which is an action RTS. The goal of the game is to survive the evil Piglin forces that are invading, by building fortresses and by destroying their outposts. Players will gather resources, build a small army and direct it against enemy forces. While not as deep or nuanced as other big-name games in the genre, Minecraft Legends is surprisingly enjoyable for players of all kinds and ages, and is a wonderful introduction to the Real Time Strategy genre. It is good when played solo, but it really shines in multiplayer, where up to 4 people can join forces and split tasks in order to better overcome the Piglin invasion. Minecraft Legends is wonderfully integrated into the Minecraft universe, using the same iconic blocky graphics that Minecraft is famous for, yet adding complexity and visual effects for a completely new experience.
The original: Minecraft Java/Bedrock
The original Minecraft was written in Java and could only run on Windows and Linux computers. When its popularity increased and it needed to be ported to consoles, the game engine was completely rewritten and is now known as Bedrock. Today both versions exist, Bedrock running on all consoles, mobiles and PC, while the Java edition can only be run on Linux and Windows and is not compatible with its Bedrock counterpart.
Minecraft has severely grown over the years, adding lots of new features, but the basic gameplay remains largely the same: gather materials and build whatever suits your fancy! Millions of players log in daily, and with worlds capable of reaching a size of 60.000 kilometers no one will run out of space anytime soon!
The action RPG: Minecraft Dungeons
In 2020 a new, spin-off Minecraft game was made: Minecraft Dungeons. The graphic style and the mechanics are the same as the regular Minecraft game, but in this instance the game structure is story-driven, more like an action RPG a la Diablo. Players can choose their character and will explore dungeons, killing monsters, in a regular quest to save the villagers and beat the villain. Up to 4 players can join in local or online cooperative play, so the fun can be easily shared and multiplied. Six DLCs have been released for this game, continuing the story after the main game’s ending and bringing the Orb of Dominance storyline to a close. Minecraft Dungeons is approachable both by complete newcomers to the genre and by experienced players, it will be enjoyable for both.
The fighters: Steve & Alex
Minecraft is not even limited to their own games. Steve and Alex, the main characters of the original game, can be purchased as additional fighters in the successful fighting game Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch. If you ever wondered how they would fare in a brawl against Mario, Terry Bogard or Sephiroth, this is your chance to find out!
