What is Guild Wars?
Guild Wars is one of the oldest and most appreciated online RPGs, dating back to 2005. Despite its age, it’s still very much beloved by fans, and receives regular updates to keep things fresh and interesting. In 2012 a “sequel” was released, titled Guild Wars 2, which shares setting and lore with the original game but plays very differently.
Why was it “Reforged”
At the beginning of December 2025, developer ArenaNet released a big update to Guild Wars and rebranded the game "Guild Wars Reforged". The update is not about new content, rather it was done to include complete support for Steam Deck and game controllers, and add some interface improvements to make playing the game more smooth. So, if you were struggling to play Guild Wars on your big screen TV, now you can do it easily thanks to the controller support.
Is Guild Wars Reforged different from Guild Wars 2?
Yes, Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 are very different games. Granted, they share the same setting in Tyria and most of the lore and history, but the way the game is played is most different. The first Guild Wars is an online RPG, it means that you can meet other people in the hub and maybe a few other places, but when you’re out adventuring you do it solo or with whoever is in your party, at most. Guild Wars 2, on the other hand, is a real MMORPG with hundreds, thousands of players existing in the game world at the same time, free to interact with each other however they like at any given moment. You are still killing monsters and completing quests, but the two games are hardly similar. Also, Guild Wars 2 has a more direct, action-oriented approach to combat, while the first Guild Wars is more methodical and tactical. Both are interesting and fun, it all boils down to what kind of gameplay you like the most.
Another big difference is that players need to buy Guild Wars if they want to play it, while Guild Wars 2 is free-to-play and anyone can download the base game. Only the optional expansions are for sale.
What is in store for Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2?
More updates are planned for Guild Wars, hopefully additional content and more tweaks to make it more modern. Details have not been disclosed yet, but the developer hinted that things are coming. Guild Wars 2 is even more alive, with big expansions still being released (the latest one, Visions of Eternity, came out less than 2 months ago). Whichever one you choose to play, you’re certain to have a lot of fun and plenty of things to do. And the best thing? You can even play both!
