In Psychonauts 2 you take once again the role of Rasputin (a.k.a. Raz), a young Psychonaut with powerful psychic powers. Raz, like his fellow Psychonauts, can enter a person's brain to investigate and even change it. At the start of the game, Raz has just completed an important mission that allows him to enter Psychonaut Headquarters as a young cadet and train as an intern.

Although Psychonauts 2 is a platformer game, the setting and play style is very flexible. You will fight enemies by using telekinesis, pyrokinesis and levitation. Gamers who played the first Psychonauts will recognize these moves.

This sequel expands the arsenal with various possibilities, including the option to change the state of mind in the brain. For example, Raz and his classmates are being held back in class because their teacher thinks it's far too dangerous to send them on a mission. By probing her brain, Raz learns that the school has budget problems. By changing the connection between 'risk' and 'death' into 'risk' and 'money', Raz changes the teacher's behaviour, allowing them to go on the mission.

Psychonauts 2 is mixing psychedelic with fun and cult

When you play Psychonauts 2, you will find that there is a lot of humour and jokes weaved into the story and gameplay. From its origin, Psychonauts is a cult classic, and its successor is just like that! You will find humour and comedy through everything, from the enemy descriptions and scenario design, to perfect line deliveries from the voice actors. Together with the art style, you get the feeling of being in one of Cartoon Network’s animated series like “Courage the Cowardly Dog”.

Although full of comedy, there is a serious side to it. Psychonauts 2 opens with a mental health advisory, warning players that the game contains “artistic interpretations of serious mental health conditions including addiction, PTSD, panic attacks, anxiety, and delusions.” As you play the game, you will come across these conditions like never before. Hopefully, the game opens up the subject matter. That would be a positive outcome of playing this game.
