The story of this game takes place in the eerie Shadow Valley, enveloped in thick mist. A once-dark moon has mysteriously shattered into pieces. Professor E. Gadd witnessed the event and enlists Luigi, the ghost hunter, and his Poltergust 5000—a vacuum-like device that captures ghosts—to expel the mischievous spirits responsible for the moon’s fall. Will Luigi muster the courage to retrieve the moon’s fragments and save Shadow Valley?

The main storyline of this game is for solo play, but there is a multiplayer mode called “Scarescraper”. In this mode, you team up with up to four other players to complete various tasks and can assist other players in need. Scarescraper can be played locally or online. The Scarescraper mode offers three different options:
- Work with your teammates to banish various ghosts from the tower within a time limit.
- Collaborate with your team to quickly find the Scarescraper’s exit; defeating ghosts earns you extra time.
- Search the tower with friends to find and capture ghosts one by one.
