Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is, as the name implies, the ultimate Smash fighting game for Nintendo Switch. Featuring more than 70 playable characters (not counting DLC additions), over 100 stages and upwards of 1000 spirits, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is an inexhaustible source of fun for both the fighting game aficionado and the casual player looking for a quick match with friends.

It’s messy. It’s fun. It’s Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

The goal of the game is simple: to smash your opponents off the arena. There is no actual health bar, all you have is a raising percentage that shows how likely it is for you to be thrown off. These mechanics may seem overly simple, but when you factor in the huge playstyle variety brought by the over 70 different fighters, from Pikachu to Sephiroth, the arenas that may change mid-fight, a lot of special moves, the added perks provided by the innumerable spirits (a kind of power-ups) you can find, not to mention that matches can have up to 8 players, you can see that things can get hectic and messy very soon.

Lots of characters from lots of games

When you first start the game you will only have access to the 8 basic characters from the first Smash game (1999), but as you play you will soon unlock many more. The base game features 76 fighters, 11 of which are new to this game. You can for example play as Mario, Sonic, Snake or Ryu, but also as Pac-Man, a Mii fighter or Kirby. In addition, 11 more fighters can be obtained through Fighter Pass DLCs. These are the contents of the two Fighter Passes:

Fighter Pass 1

  • Joker (Persona 5)
  • Hero (Dragon Quest XI)
  • Banjo & Kazooie (Banjo & Kazooie)
  • Terry Bogard (Fatal Fury / King of Fighters)
  • Byleth (Fire Emblem)

Fighter Pass 2

  • Min Min (ARMS)
  • Steve & Alex (Minecraft)
  • Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII)
  • Pyra / Mythra (Xenoblade Chronicles 2)
  • Kazuya Mishima (Tekken)
  • Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
Mario VS Donkey Kong

Customize the fight as you see fit

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is to some degree a party game, for groups of friends to just select their favourite character and beat the heck from each other. But Super Smash Bros Ultimate also has the heart of a true fighting game. While there’s not the plethora of commands and combos that Street Fighter or Tekken have, there is a depth to the fight thanks to the huge variety of fighters, each with their own abilities and playing style.

Custom rules can be set and saved in presets for future use, so you can, for example, set up an elimination game with no items with a 1 minute time limit. This way it’s easy to set up your favourite rules for quick matches with friends.
