Throne and Liberty - the Next Generation’s World of Warcraft?

Throne and Liberty Header
Developed by the South Korean video game developer, NCSOFT, Throne and Liberty has been a long time coming. Having originally been announced in 2011 as a part of the Lineage series, the game has been reworked significantly over the years, but it is now finally coming out this year. NCSOFT is certainly no stranger to creating successful and acclaimed MMORPGs. From the aforementioned Lineage series to Guild Wars, NCSOFT is one of the most respected MMORPG developers out there. One can only imagine, with as much time as NCSOFT have been working on Throne and Liberty, that it will be NCSOFT’s best game yet.

What Exactly is Throne and Liberty?

Although we don’t yet know an awful lot about Throne and Liberty, it seems certain the game will continue and expand on what has made past NCSOFT MMORPGs great in the past. Throne and Liberty is set in a seamless open-world explorable zone, meaning you will be able to explore anywhere you want anytime, just as MMORPGs should support. There is a story in Throne and Liberty, but the focus is on letting players create their own personal adventures. On top of that, the game contains state-of-the-art character customization tools, and you’ll even have the ability to make a character based on real photos using the AI customization feature.

The game world also has an incredible dynamic weather system that will affect gameplay. For example, high winds alter the projectiles of ranged weapons and rainy weather affects some spells like thunder-based ones. This will provide a whole new layer of strategy that has never been attempted before in this depth.

What is Combat and Classes Like?

Unlike many MMORPGs, Throne and Liberty features a classless combat system. This might seem like a negative, but it actually offers the player a lot more flexibility. Instead of being forced to choose between a mage or a paladin or whatever at the start of the game—when you barely even know what they mean—the game allows you to change your playing style throughout the whole game. In Throne and Liberty, the role of the player is determined by their chosen weapon, meaning the player always has a great deal of freedom.

Does Throne and Liberty Support PvP?

It’s inevitable that some players of Throne and Liberty will be more interested in PvE (player versus environment) and others more intrigued by the PvP (player versus player) gameplay. An interesting thing about combat in Throne and Liberty is that PvP combat will be entirely optional. The vast majority of zones in Throne and Liberty will be safe. However, during regional events and boss raids and so on, PvP may be turned on. Players can check the scheduled events of the zone they’re in and chose whether they’d like to participate.

The world of Throne and Liberty consists of many diverse regions with their own fascinating backstories, and the competitions are based on these. There will also be guilds to join in Throne and Liberty. In battles, players have the opportunity to fight for their guild over the control of so-called possession stones.
